Selekt Few are a Perth-based hip hop crew consisting of Percuss (Greg Tangey), Shareef (Luke Skinner) and DJ Tek (Tim Lumia).
Our debut album ‘MD’, released on April 14, 2014, was almost entirely produced by Mdusu and features guest vocals from FG, Mdusu, Charley Caruso and Callum Presbury. Recording and mixing for the album was done in-house by Percuss & Shareef.
We make music we enjoy and which delivers messages we relate to. The direction of many of our songs reflect the strong political leanings of Shareef who is a well known and outspoken activist on issues around human rights, inequality and the environment.
But they’re not always political. Much of our music is personal, relating directly to our personal experiences including love, loss, friendship and the struggles and successes of daily life.
Shareef & Percuss first met when we were teenagers. We became friends after discovering shared interests in computers and music, particularly drum & bass and hip hop. We began making music together in January 2009 and the name ‘Selekt Few’ came along shortly after.
DJ Tek, a welcome addition, has been DJing for about 15 years and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and turntable skill. Tek performed regularly at Perth hip hop nights at Hyde Park and the Rosemount before losing contact with the scene due to work and family commitments.
A random online ad from Tek led to a pub meeting and discussion with Percuss & Shareef, and after a few rehearsal sessions together we quickly invited him to join Selekt Few.
Percuss and Shareef also host the hip hop show “Rhythm & Poetry” on Goonbag Radio and Percuss has been managing the hip-hop website of the same name since 2009.
Our song “Words” first appeared on the Australian Hip Hop Supports CanTeen album.
